Well who should I hear on Life Matters this morning but Gina Prendergast describing the year she spent (almost) eliminating plastic from her life. She has some wonderful links on her website, including Ocean Crusaders, who are a little like Coastal ambassadors but a whole lot more active all over the world.
Gina made some important points in the interview, emphasising that although recycling is better than throwing plastic away, it can be an inefficient system, and still does nothing to stop the manufacture of plastics, which in some cases involves employing people in dangerous and unhealthy conditions. Another thing to think about is that continuing to use plastic – and throwaway plastic items above all – encourages the oil industry, which continues to create so many environmental disasters in the oceans.
Go and look at Gina’s website and read her blog, and see what you think! Could you spend a year without buying any plastic?
